Australia grants temporary asylum to 12 Commonwealth Games athletes
Tuesday, March 28, 2006 Twelve athletes from Sierra Leone, who disappeared from the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne last week, have been granted bridging visas by Australia’s Department of Immigration. The group have been released into the Sydney community. Three of the Sierra Leoneans say they face forced female circumcision if they go back. Department of Immigration spokesperson Sandi Logan said the bridging visas were only a stop-gap measure. “The bridging visa simply enables them to be here lawfully if in the period of time between now and then the type of visa they apply for requires further investigation on a country basis or a country profile, if in fact that’s the type of visa and the type of investigation that’s required,” he said. A group of six Sierra Leoneans contacted the Northern Beaches Refugee Sanctuary – who had previously given shelter and assistance to six other missing athletes. Members of…

Kelly Robert, the primary wage earner of the family household was laid off from work, then unable to find a job for an extended period of time. When he did finally land a job as an analyst for a government contractor his salary was substantially less than his previous job. With the reduced salary, he was then unable to meet his prior financial obligations. To complicate matters further, Robert could not file bankruptcy because it would jeopardize his security clearance required for his new job. Therefore, the only viable solution for solving his financial problems was to take out a loan against his home to pay off his outstanding debts. Freedom Debt Relief went to work and was able to successfully negotiate settlements for less than the full balance with Robert’s creditors, which then allowed his home loan to…

New London police commissioner blames middle-class cocaine users for violence in Colombia and on British housing estates
Sunday, February 6, 2005 LONDON,United Kingdom —The new London police commissioner Sir Ian Blair has warned middle class dinner party users of cocaine that he is out to get them. In contrast, he is relaxed about cannabis smokers, saying he does not wish to waste police time pursuing them. He has been quoted as saying: “People seem to think the price of a wrap of cocaine is 50 quid [UK pounds], but the cost is misery on estates here and a trail of blood back to Colombia. Someone has died to bring it [cocaine] to a dinner party. People who wouldn’t dream of having a non-organic vegetable don’t seem to notice the blood on their fingers.” Blair is clearly trying to prick the conscience of the 624,000 estimated cocaine users in the UK, hoping to persuade them to boycott this Class A drug. Others, including Colombian Nobel Prize winner and…

Council of Australian Governments agree on reduced environmental regulation
Saturday, December 14, 2013 At a meeting of the Council of Australian Governments yesterday leaders of the Australian states and territories agreed to a deal with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott which would delegate more environmental decision-making powers to the states and territories about projects that might affect the environment. The “one-stop shops” policy would mean that the states would do more of the assessments for projects with the intention that eventually some states would have the full authority to make the decisions. Two states, Queensland and New South Wales, have agreed with Abbott a policy of “assessment bilaterals”. Abbott described them as follows: “Under those assessment bilaterals the states will do all the assessment work and we hope that in the not-too-distant future we will have approvals bilaterals in place which will mean the states will not only do the assessment but will also do the approvals.” All of…
