Friday, June 3, 2022 Chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life Jonathan Evans criticised United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s proposed changes to the ministerial code after the Partygate revelations on Wednesday as “highly unsatisfactory”. The watchdog slammed revisions presented last week, which allow ministers to remain serving after breaching the code and continues to restrict the ethics adviser from launching investigations without the Prime Minister’s consent. Evans said that unless the adviser, currently Lord Geidt, is allowed to scrutinise ministerial conduct independently, “suspicion about the way in which the ministerial code is administered will linger.” Evans wrote in a blog article published on gov.uk that the Committee proposed code infractions be tied to a series of graduated sanctions, rather than the “all-or-nothing approach” that gave past prime ministers unease. Number of private contractors killed in Iraq and Afghanistan passes 1,000
Wednesday, July 4, 2007 The U.S. Department of Labor has released data showing that more than 1,000 private military contractors have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, in response to a Freedom of Information request filed by Reuters. The number is based on insurance claims filed on behalf of contractors that had been killed, and includes both U.S. and foreign contractors. As of March 2007, an additional 10,569 contractors have been wounded in Iraq and 2,428 in Afghanistan. There are disputes about the exact number of contractors in Iraq, but it is estimated to be between 130,000 and 180,000 U.S.-paid private military contractors, compared to 157,000 U.S. military personnel. Iceland and United Kingdom in diplomatic dispute over financial crisis
Saturday, October 11, 2008 Relations between Iceland and the United Kingdom are deteriorating after the two nations fell out over the current financial crisis. When Iceland nationalised first Landsbanki and then Kaupthing Bank the Financial Services Authority only took on domestic assets, leaving British customers with subsidiary banks out of pocket. While Britain feels Iceland should also pay out to their citizens, Iceland blame the UK for triggering the crisis by using the Anti-terrorism, Crime and Security Act 2001 to freeze the UK assets of Icelandic banks. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown says Iceland should pay out up to €20,887 (£16,448) of UK investors’ money in the banks, particularly Icesave, an online company owned by Landsbanki which had around 300,000 accounts owned by UK customers.
