Wednesday, March 12, 2008 Almost exactly one year ago, on March 7, Garuda Indonesia Flight 200 crashed during landing at Adisucipto International Airport, near Yogyakarta, after a scheduled domestic Indonesian passenger flight. 21 people – 16 Indonesians and five Australians – were killed when the Boeing 737-400 overshot the runway, crossed a road, struck an embankment and burst into flames in a rice paddy. Overall, the plane had traveled 252m beyond the extreme end of the runway. The final report, released in October, blamed pilot error for the disaster. The report stated that the aircraft had approached at a speed far exceeding that at which the wing flaps could properly operate, and attempted to execute a landing at 408 kph (254 mph), which is 160 kph (100 mph) above the safe speed. It also found that captain Marwoto Komar had ignored fifteen activations of the Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS)…

Thursday, August 13, 2009 Both golf and rugby are set to return to the Olympic Games. The International Olympic Committee voted to include the sports at its executive board meeting in Berlin today. Rugby, specifically rugby union, and golf were selected over five other sports to be considered to participate in the Olympics. Squash, karate and roller sports tried to get onto the Olympic program as well as baseball and softball, which were voted out of the Olympic Games in 2005. The vote must still be ratified by the full IOC at it’s October meeting in Copenhagen. Golf will return after a 112-year absence from the Games; the sport was last played at the 1900 and 1904 Games. Rugby union, in its full 15-a-side version, was included in four Olympic Games, with its last appearance being in 1924. If the sports are included after the October meeting, rugby will return…

Here’s An Opinion On: Mortgage Brokers Fyshwick Submitted by: Alan Lim Deciding to apply for a home loan refinance is a decision that can best be made by the individual homeowners after reviewing all the facts and identifying all the financial implications. Why should I apply? There are many reasons to apply for a home loan refinance, although some are not good reasons. The main good reason is to reduce the amount of interest payment during the balance of the loan term. However, another primary reason why homeowners choose to get a new loan on their home is to free up ready cash either through the equity in the house, or through paying off credit card loan or other high interest payment. Usually a home loan is requested when the homeowner has need of a significant amount of money either on short notice, or over the next weeks or months.…

Monday, June 11, 2007 Anti-junta demonstrations in Bangkok reached their largest point yet on Saturday night, when between 10,000 and 15,000 protesters marched from Sanam Luang to the Royal Thai Army headquarters to call for the resignation of Council for National Security chairman General Sonthi Boonyaratglin. Yesterday, Sonthi, the leader of last year’s coup d’état, rejected the protesters demands, saying he would remain as chairman of the military’s governing body in the best interests of Thailand, and that he wasn’t doing the job for personal gain. “And I doubt the motives of these people who are organizing the rallies,” Sonthi was quoted as saying by The Nation newspaper. The demonstrations continued yesterday, albeit smaller, with crowds estimated at 3,000. The organizer is People’s Television (PTV), a satellite television station that supports ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Organizers have vowed to continue the demonstrations until the junta gives up power. The…
