Monday, March 25, 2019 From March 15 to 17, the Canadian city of Toronto played host to the tenth Furnal Equinox, an annual event dedicated to the “furry fandom.” Wikinews attended. Programming ranged from music to gender, science to art, covering dozens of aspects of the varied subculture. The event’s featured guests were visual artists Moth Monarch and Cat-Monk Shiro, as well as the co-owners of US fursuit costume builders Don’t Hug Cacti. The event raised nearly CDN$11,000 for Pet Patrol, a non-profit rescue organization in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, run by volunteers. This exceeded their goal of $10,000, the funds needed to finish a rural sanctuary. The furry community is well-known for their charitable efforts. Along with direct donations, the funds were raised through a charity auction offering original artwork, and a fursuit design by guests of honour “Don’t Hug Cacti.” Last year, Furnal Equinox raised funds for a farm animal…

Sunday, February 24, 2008 In the year 2000, Dries Buytaert created Drupal, a freely licensed and open source tool to manage websites, as a bulletin board for his college dorm. Since Dries released the software and a community of thousands of volunteer developers have added and improved modules, Drupal has grown immensely popular. Drupal won the overall Open CMS Award in 2007, and some speakers in Drupal’s spacious developer’s room at FOSDEM 2008 were dreaming aloud of its world domination. Buytaert (now 29) just finished his doctoral thesis and has founded the start-up Acquia. The new company wants to become Drupal’s best friend, with the help of an all-star team and US$7 million collected from venture capitalists. Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent sat down with Dries in Brussels to discuss these recent exciting developments. Here’s An Opinion On: Granny Flats Lake Macquarie Backspace Living byAlma Abell Homeowners often wonder when they should get roofing work done on their residences. After winter snow, ice, and the wind have damaged shingles, but before summer thunderstorms begin to wreak their havoc, roofing companies often have the time available to get to a number of different jobs. Consequently, spring and early summer months can be some the best times to schedule roof repairs or plan to replace the entire roof of a home. A homeowner who needs roof work done near Nashville can call a roofing contractor in Franklin to handle the necessary work. Experts recommend having roof work done in the winter, spring, or summer because it’s easier for a roofing company to fit the job into their schedule. Late summer and fall are typically the busiest times for roofers, as many homeowners know. Because the…

Monday, February 11, 2008 On Sunday evening, around 16:30 local time, three armed men wearing ski masks stole four paintings: Claude Monet‘s “Poppy field at Vetheuil,” Edgar Degas‘ “Ludovic Lepic and his Daughter,” Vincent van Gogh‘s “Blooming Chestnut Branches” and Paul Cezanne‘s “Boy in the Red Waistcoat” from Foundation E.G. Bührle museum in Zürich, Switzerland. The three armed robbers entered the museum half an hour before closing. One man with a pistol forced employees to the ground while the other two men stole the paintings. The whole ordeal lasted only 3 minutes. The men then proceeded to a van and left. Friday, April 11, 2008 Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting. He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.” When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below. Here’s An Opinion On: How To Cure Sweaty Palms Permanently Best Cure For Sweaty Hands byAlma Abell There are plenty of bargains you can find when you decide to go for a Used Harley Davidson in Pittsburgh. If you do your inspection correctly, you could end up with a quality motorcycle at a great price. Before purchasing a used motorcycle, be sure to take it on a test ride as this will give you a unique opportunity to evaluate its performance. The state of the bike’s frame will tell you a lot about the care it has received from previous owners. As a precaution, you should never buy a motorcycle with dents, cracks or kinks on its frame without asking what caused them. Getting information from the bike seller on why he is selling it and where it is taken for regular maintenance can help create a better picture of…
